Contact/Biography
Axel Öberg is a Swedish photojournalist renowned for his compelling portraiture and storytelling that illuminate social issues and human resilience. Born in Stockholm, he moved to New York City in 2006 to study at the International Center of Photography, supported by a New York Times Scholarship. He spent a decade in NYC before returning to Stockholm in 2017, where he continues his work.
Öberg’s photography often focuses on individuals affected by conflict, displacement, and cultural identity. His portraits of Syrian refugees, published by National Geographic, aim to humanize the refugee experience by showcasing the people behind the statistics. In another notable project, he documented Sweden’s “greaser” subculture—enthusiasts of 1950s American cars and fashion—earning recognition from Pictures of the Year International.
Öberg’s clients include National Geographic, The New York Times, Wired, and various European media outlets.
